Jaya Prakash graduated from the University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours). He was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in January 1975. Thereafter, with a break whilst he was in full-time national service, he was in legal practice until he became the exclusive correspondent for a well-known P&I Club.

Mr. Prakash has been a Mediator on the panel of the Singapore Mediation Centre from 1999. He was made a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in 2000. He has been on the panel of Singapore International Mediation Institute from 2015.

Mr Prakash is well sought after as an arbitrator in commercial, transnational and maritime disputes. He has over 40 years of experience in commercial and maritime law matters.
