Law Society of Hong Kong elects new President

Newly appointed head of the Law Society of Hong Kong, Stephen Hung Wan-shun replaced Ambrose Lam San-keung, who tendered his resignation. Lam confirmed that he would be stepping down after a vote of no confidence in him passed in a general meeting on Thursday 14th August. “This may be the last time I see you as president of the Law Society”, Lam said to members of the media. He continued, “In order to maintain the solidarity of the Law Society, I will tender my resignation to the council with immediate effect”.

Criminal lawyer Stephen Hung previously served as vice-president of the society. In a statement from the Law Society, it informed the public that it would continue to focus on defending the rule of the law and independence of the judiciary.
