Former Myanmar deputy finance minister joins Zico

ZICO_Dr-Maung-Maung-Thein-2Zico Holdings has hired Maung Maung Thein, Myanmar’s former deputy finance minister, as executive chairman of its local subsidiary, Zico Law Myanmar.

With more than four decades of experience in both the private and public sectors, Maung Maung Thein has represented the finance ministry on matters including international relations, state-owned banking and also non-banking financial sectors. His achievements include the establishment and liberalisation of Myanmar’s insurance sector and the historic launch of the Yangon Stock Exchange in 2016.

Maung Maung Thein has also held positions at the Housing Authority, the National Shipping Line and the National Insurance Company, and has played a senior role at numerous professional bodies. He has published six books, including a notable textbook on insurance law, and written more than 350 articles published both locally and internationally.

Based in Yangon, Maung Maung Thein took up the role on September 1 and is supported by a team of Myanmar and foreign lawyers in Yangon. The firm advises on a wide range of matters, including corporate commercial, mergers and acquisitions, projects, infrastructure and utilities, and real estate.

With the arrival of Maung Maung Thein, Samuel Britton, previously managing partner of Zico Law Myanmar, has taken on a new role as of counsel to the Yangon firm.
