Mayer Brown has announced the appointment of Hannah Ha as the chair of the firm’s Asia board. Ha, a partner based in Hong Kong, will also join the eight-member global management committee, replacing Duncan Abate who held the role since 2016. Her appointment will be effective from 1 June 2023.
Jon Van Gorp, the global chair of Mayer Brown, praised Ha’s leadership and contributions to the firm’s success in Asia, and the global Corporate & Securities practice. He expressed his delight at welcoming Ha to the global Management Committee and thanked Duncan Abate for his leadership and commitment over the past seven years.
Ha has held several leadership positions at Mayer Brown, including co-leader of the global Corporate & Securities practice and a seat on the firm’s Partnership Board. She is a renowned corporate lawyer specialising in highly regulated sectors in Mainland China and Hong Kong. Ha is an active advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the firm and has been listed in the IFLR1000 Women Leaders since 2020.
Speaking on her appointment, Ha said “Mayer Brown remains uniquely positioned to advise the world’s leading companies and financial institutions in each of the world’s three largest financial centres – Hong Kong, London and New York. More broadly, our 160th anniversary in Hong Kong is testament to our long-term commitment to the Greater Bay Area, where we increasingly support our local client base through our global practice, including in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. I look forward to working with the global Management Committee and leading the firm in Asia alongside our senior partner for the region, Terence Tung, as we celebrate 160 years of delivering excellence in Asia”.
Tung echoed these sentiments sharing “Hannah’s appointment is an exciting new chapter to our 160-year story in Hong Kong and Asia. 2023 has been a successful year for our practice across the region as we continue to grow with our clients and serve the broader community. I look forward to working with Hannah in her new role as we build on this momentum across Asia and celebrate our progress alongside the development of the city where we were founded in 1863”.
