Teresa Cheng SC JP has been appointed the new Chairperson of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. Her appointment comes at a time when the new HKIAC Rules are coming into force (1st November) and when the Centre itself is undergoing changes to its organisation structure. With a wealth of experience behind her, Cheng is currently also the Vice President of the International Council of Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) and a member of the International Centre for Settlement of Disputes’ panel of Arbitrators. As a nod to her achievement in the sphere of public service, she was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star by Hong Kong’s Chief Executive in 2011. Echoing Hong Kong’s Secretary for Justice, Rimsky Yuen’s comments at the 2nd annual Hong Kong Arbitration Week last week*, Cheng remarked she believed that “Hong Kong has a strong international arbitration culture.” She additionally stated that the city had “a pool of experienced international arbitration practitioners, and many rising stars in the field.” |
