| A spate of recent high-profile data leakages cases in Hong Kong has prompted the Privacy Commissioner to consider revision of the region’s data privacy ordinance. Cap 486, the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance generally reflects the OECD guidelines for the protection of privacy, and has been in force in the city since 1996. But embarrassing breaches over the past several weeks, which have included admissions of leakages by the Department of Health, the Department of Immigration, the Hospital Authority and the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation have led to strong public support for legislative review. The Privacy Commissioner has been challenged to enhance the efficiency and enforcement of the Ordinance, to introduce preventative measures against leakages and to clarify certain regulatory matters. |
