Debevoise & Plimpton: Focus on SFC and U.S. SEC Enforcement Priorities
Herbert Smith Freehills is updating its agile working policy with an expectation that its people will work in the office for an average of 60 percent of their working time.
The firm say the 60 percent benchmark can be adjusted to suit each individual, team and situation. It will apply to partners, lawyers and business services roles, including PAs. The policy will only apply once an office is physically open and operational, and physical distancing rules have been greatly relaxed or removed.
“Despite the pressure and worries of the pandemic, we know that many of our people have greatly valued the flexibility of how, where and when we work, gaining more time for their families, health and other commitments,” said CEO Justin D’Agostino.
“We also recognise that the office will remain an important place for connection, collaboration and learning, with clients and with each other.”
“By setting this benchmark for post-pandemic operations, we hope to give our people the flexibility to design a working pattern that suits them, their colleagues and our clients, and to offer some certainty in uncertain times.”
According to the firm, the policy is backed up with stringent information security, health and safety assessments for home working, and resources for wellbeing.
“We cannot predict with absolute certainty what the workplace will look like six months or even a year from now,” said D’Agostino. “However, this new policy gives every part of our firm the freedom to start imagining and designing new ways of working as those workplace practices evolve.”
It is likely other international firms will make similar announcements over the coming months.

Raise money for Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Institute (cc-tdi.org)
“Childhood cancer is a global health issue touching the lives of at least 300,000 children each year according to WHO estimates, but likely as many as 400,000 children with a quarter of these children going undiagnosed in developing countries. Even for children in nations with state of the art care, 1 in 5 children will not survive. Pharmaceutical companies and their internal champions now more than ever are reaching past the new regulatory requires to test adult cancer drugs for effectiveness in children; however, while US FDA approvals for adult cancer number on average 12 or more each year – for children, effective drugs for pediatric cancer have only been approved 8 times in the last 42 years.
See auction and giveaways below.
The 2019 fundraising support of In-House Community and their clients super-charged childhood cancer research at the Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Institute (cc-tdi.org), and this year promises to make an even bigger impact. Highlights of supported work at cc-TDI this past year includes a machine learning project to help improve the diagnosis of children with cancer in developing countries, and developed ones. This project was piloted with the Intel spinout OmicsAutomation.com, and complemented by design of a pocket microscope slide scanner by a capstone engineering team at the University of Idaho. The project is hoped to move to the IBM World Community Grid Smash Childhood Cancer Project, led by Dr. Godfrey Chan (Hong Kong University), and for which cc-TDI is a major participant. This project is a key example of how it takes a community to address a question that may not have a profit margin, but has priceless impact for children and affected families. In-House Community leads the way.”
