Walking for a Cause: A Conversation About the Hong Kong Legal Walk
The Hong Kong Legal Walk has grown into one of the most energising and unifying events for the city’s legal community. We sat down for a candid conversation with Chris Seddon, a core member of the Hong Kong Legal Walk Steering Committee, as well as the head of business development at MdME law firm, to discuss why this year’s Walk feels bigger than ever. And why the tradition continues to resonate.
The Legal Walk seems to get more vibrant each year. What stood out to you about this year’s event, and why is it so special for Hong Kong’s legal community?
Absolutely, it’s incredible to see how the Legal Walk has grown. What started as a simple idea has become a date people now bookmark in their diaries. It’s an opportunity to bring together law firms, in-house teams, and the wider legal community for a shared cause, and it really highlights the strength of Hong Kong’s legal sector.
This year, thanks to the increased support, we were able to host a launch event – something the community really enjoyed – and we’re looking forward to celebrating together again at our 21 November closing and prize-giving event at Taikoo Square.
This year, we’ve seen firms, in-house teams-and even pets-turn up in full spirit. What has surprised you most while organising this year’s Legal Walk?
The creativity has been amazing! Teams have shown up with pets dressed in themed outfits, colleagues have turned the walk into team-building activities, and there’s been a real sense of fun.
The biggest surprise has been how quickly people embraced the idea of this being more than a walk. It’s now a celebration of community. From Partners and Trainees to HR and management—everyone gets involved, and that’s been a real highlight.

For anyone who hasn’t joined before, or who might still be on the fence, how would you describe the Hong Kong Legal Walk experience?
It’s fun, it’s social, and it’s meaningful. You’re outdoors, walking alongside peers, supporting charities that genuinely make a difference.
The process is also simple: sign up, create your HKLW page, and you’re ready to go. People return year after year because it’s not just an event, it’s an experience that blends team-building, networking, wellness, and purpose.
This year’s chosen charities -The Nesbitt Centre, KELY Support Group, and ACSVAW—do vital work. How does the Steering Committee choose which causes to support each year?
We look for charities that align with HKLW’s core values: education, empowerment, and social justice. The Volunteering Steering Committee carefully reviews where the funds will have the most meaningful impact. It’s essential to us that the money raised goes to organisations driving real change in the local community.

Chris, how did you first get involved with the Legal Walk, and what role have you played in this year’s event?
I got involved because I genuinely enjoy being part of this community. The Legal Walk is a chance to build meaningful connections while supporting causes that matter. I’m in a fortunate position to lend my time and experience to help HKLW grow, and for me, it’s all about bringing people together to support organisations that need our help.
My role has focused on driving engagement – connecting with firms, sponsors, and partners to help the event expand while keeping it inclusive. It’s about building momentum and ensuring everyone feels valued and part of the Walk’s success.
Why does the Legal Walk matter to you – both personally and professionally?
Personally, it’s about giving back and helping bring the Walk to life. Balancing HKLW with my day-to-day work can be challenging, but our volunteering steering committee is fantastic—we all pitch in, and it’s incredibly rewarding.
Professionally, we know the legal sector can be highly competitive. What I love is that the Legal Walk channels that competitive spirit into something positive. It unites firms to raise funds, support local organisations, and amplify causes that deserve attention. It really brings out the best in our community.

Finally, what message would you send to the wider in-house legal community across Asia? Why should they lace up and join this year’s Walk?
It shows we care about the communities we serve and that we’re willing to show up for them. It’s also a fantastic way to connect with peers, build camaraderie, and be part of something that genuinely makes a difference. Your support can help shape the impact we make together.
